Gladstone School District is partnering with the Oregon Sight and Hearing Foundation to conduct vision screenings at John Wetten Elementary on Jan. 15 and at the Gladstone Center for Children & Families (pre-K and kindergarten) on Jan. 16. The screening utilizes a Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener to measure your child’s eyes and determine if they need a comprehensive eye exam. The Spot works like a digital camera and uses infrared light to measure and detect potential vision problems most commonly found in children. Through these screenings, we are able to help catch vision issues early and support each student’s educational journey. There is no cost to families whose children participate. If you do not want your child to participate in the screening, contact the school nurse at utterbacke@gladstone.k12.or.us. For questions and information about the screening, call Oregon Lions Foundation at 503-413-7399. If your student receives an abnormal vision result, a letter will be sent home from the school within a few weeks following the screening, along with a list of resources for eye exams in the community.

Gladstone School District will benefit from a federal grant to increase our capacity to address factors related to youth substance use. We’re working with Oregon City Together and its fiscal agent, Oregon City School District 62, to manage $366,602 in grant funding annually for five years. “We welcome the opportunity to work with our neighbors in Oregon City to help all youth thrive,” said Gladstone Superintendent Jeremiah Patterson. Leaders in both school districts are looking forward to the grant allowing for the creation of a data-driven prevention system that will allow for a larger reach. Since research shows that prevention should start early, we see this as important work for the benefit of students and families. “This grant will fund implementing a Communities That Care system that involves the Oregon City and Gladstone school districts as well as many other community stakeholders,” said Michele Stroh, coalition chair and school board member. “It will take us to a new level of prevention effectiveness.” Our federal partners at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are funding an evidence-based coalition-based prevention system that uses a public health approach to prevent youth problems and help young people thrive. Oregon City Together is currently hiring a coordinator to help facilitate this program.
