The Gladstone Center for Children and Families (GCCF) stands as a model of what strong, sustained community partnerships can achieve. This multi-use facility reflects deep collaboration between the Gladstone School District, as well as county and state partners, all working together to support children and families in a comprehensive, coordinated way. The GCCF serves children and families in Gladstone as well as all children and families from anywhere in Clackamas County.
Serving children from birth to age six, the Center operates as a small learning community designed to meet the developmental needs of young learners during their most critical years. What makes this facility particularly impactful is its “wraparound services” approach. Families can access a wide range of supports under one roof, including relief childcare, early learning programs, medical care, and even dental services. This integrated model removes barriers for families and ensures that children receive consistent, holistic care.
Since its opening in 2008, the Gladstone Center for Children and Families has been a beacon for the state of Oregon, demonstrating how effective partnerships can elevate outcomes for children and families. Many children from outside of Gladstone have been PK-12 career students due to the excellent reputation of the GCCF and its well known positive outcomes for children and their earliest education. It continues to serve as an example of innovation and collaboration in public education with community services. The Gladstone Center for Children and Families brings in to the District grant dollars through these partnerships that assist the District to fund its programs and services. Our Health Share grant is amazing! The District also receives modest leasing revenues for spaces utilised by our partners.
Community members and board members who have not yet visited the facility are strongly encouraged to do so. Tours can be arranged by contacting Principal Sarah Dunkin, who can provide firsthand insight into the Center’s programs and impact. One impressive program at the Center is our partnership with the Teaching Preschool Partners, an inquiry based, sensory learning experience first developed at the Portland Children’s Museum and widely accepted as one of the best hands-on learning programs in Oregon. So the trajectory for a child from relief nursery, to head start, to preschool, to kindergarten to first grade is a beautiful story of growing up in Gladstone. Children then stay through graduation enjoying all the premiere educational opportunities we provide.
At this time, all district schools are viable, actively used, and serving their intended purposes. They are not surplus properties—nor, as I would say, “on the menu.” Should the Board choose in the future to formally assess the value and use of district facilities by a qualified third party, it is recommended that all schools undergo a consistent, evaluation process based on guidelines established by the Board and then have conversations and discussions regarding the results.
Any decisions regarding district properties should be made only after such comprehensive assessments are completed. This work could be thoughtfully undertaken in collaboration with the incoming superintendent during the 2027–28 timeframe. Finally, I would ask the Board to seriously consider the ramifications of selling a property that its constituents voted for in the 2006 bond election only 20 years ago.

We have registration materials ready starting today so your family can also experience the magic of kindergarten in Gladstone. Beyond reading, writing and math, each Gladstone kindergarten student also has weekly music, physical education, discovery, art and technology instruction. An extended-day program offers onsite childcare, before and after school. Kindergarten classes are at the Gladstone Center for Children & Families, 18905 Portland Ave. The spacious and secure classrooms, playgrounds and facilities are specially designed for the district's youngest learners. April 25 is this year's Gladstone Arbor Day & Plant Sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Gladstone Nature Park, 18111 Webster Road. Free admission and parking. Many special plants from Willamette Valley nurseries will be featured. The Clackamas County Library will offer their free seed collection. Kraxberger Middle School's Gearheads robotics team will recycle your electronics. Gladstone High School students are selling veggie starts and will offer herbs from our greenhouse program. Gladstone Baseball Association will have refreshments to purchase to support our teams. Mushroom-growing kits are returning and we will have our beautiful hanging baskets for Mother’s Day again. New vendors this year: Author and professor Casey Clapp, Prescot Bluebirds, Metro, Demon Dog Bakery and the Gladstone Community Center. Please bring a couple of cans of food for the Gladstone Food Pantry at Kraxberger.

Mark your calendar for 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 to meet with Gladstone School District leadership to discuss projects planned if a school bond passes later this year. Meet in Gladstone High School’s cafeteria with our superintendent and school board members to prioritize various school construction projects that could be part of our next funding request to voters, which would include $10.2 million in state matching funds if the measure passes. During previous community engagement sessions, most citizens recognized the importance of addressing aging infrastructure to ensure safe and conducive learning environments for students while protecting the community’s investment. Gladstone’s four school buildings, which are all over 50 years old, have systems (like HVAC and roofing) at the end of their useful life, according to the 2023 report by BRIC Architecture.
Tickets are now on sale for "The Wizard of Oz," produced by Gladstone High School's Drama Department. The musical features students from the high school, as well as students from Kraxberger Middle School. Come see this delightful musical based on L. Frank Baum's book at 7 p.m. from March 8-11. The Gladstone School Board invites qualified persons to apply for appointment to a vacant position on the board. The term of appointment will be effective upon appointment through June 30, 2027. The two qualifications for appointment are: 1) Be an elector (registered voter in the Gladstone School District) 2) Have resided in the district for a period of one year immediately preceding the appointment. Interested qualified community members should complete an application and submit by 5 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2025. On July 16, we will be applying pesticide to the Gladstone High School baseball and softball complexes, applying Acelepryn Extra 20 oz per acre on approximately 7 acres. 140 ounces of product applied in sufficient water to affirm good coverage. Warning signs will be posted at these locations 24 hours prior to the application and will remain for 72 hours after.

Gladstone School District's summer food service program will be happening again this year. We will begin on June 23, and the program runs through Aug. 22. The schedule is: 10:30-10:50 a.m. Kraxberger Middle School ; 11-11:30 a.m. Gladstone Center for Children & Families; 11:40 a.m.-12:10 p.m. John Wetten Elementary's front parking area; 12:15-12:45 p.m. Max Patterson Park next to the aquatic area .
