Title 1 Curriculum
What is the Learning Zone?
Most first and second grade students will visit the Learning Zone thirty-
minutes a day, five days a week. During this time your child meets with
a qualified adult in a small group, all working at the same reading level,
with instruction aimed specifically for that group of students. Using this
framework ensures that each student is challenged and working to their
full potential.
Third and fourth grade students that require extra support with reading come
to the Learning Zone each day for half an hour of reading instruction. During
this time they work in small groups to encourage risk taking, discussions
and practice in a supportive environment.
Focus for Learning
Students making the transition from second grade into third are no longer
learning how to read but reading to LEARN! Our class focuses on strategies,
strengthening reading skills and problem solving, reading for a purpose,
finding the main idea, comprehending content text and fluency. We work closely
with staff to provide extra support to students who do not read at grade
level. It is important to foster confidence and independence in our students
to help them succeed in their classrooms.
What takes place in the small reading groups?
In a small reading group students have a chance to learn and practice different
reading strategies (ways to figure out unknown words) and work on understanding
what they are reading. We do this by reading books, practicing poems, performing
in reader’s theaters, lively discussions, and much, much more. Our
goal is for each student to develop reading skills that will help them become
independent readers and to develop confidence in themselves.
We encourage you to stop by and see for yourself all of the great things
that are happening everyday in the Learning Zone!
