Second Grade CurriculumSecond grade provides a strengthening of the basic phonic and decoding skills developed in the first grade and develops skills in understanding what we read - comprehension. Increased opportunities for writing are found in many subject areas with capitalizing, punctuation, and the utilization of nouns and verbs in the subject and predicate part of a sentence. Second grade is the transition year from manuscript to cursive writing - a happening of great student excitement. Math skills of basic addition and subtraction include sums and differences over 10. Two-place addition and subtraction problems are introduced. Concepts of money, time, expansion of shapes, fractional parts, number sentences, place value to one thousand, and numeration skills are introduced. Concepts of light, sound, heat, earth changes, and additional plant and animal study are the major areas of science study. Social studies emphasis is directed to the study of communities outside the local area, and introducing and expanding map skills. Health study is directed to the senses, dental development, safety at home and play, the importance of community health workers, the importance of basic nutrition, and drug awareness. The development of independent study habits, good listening skills, and being responsible are major thrusts during the middle of the primary school years. |
