Library/Media Curriculum

Kindergarten:
Book Care: students learn how to care for books, by having clean hands, keep library books away from pets, keep them in a dry and safe place.
Check Out: students learn the procedures for finding books in their section of the library. They learn to use a shelf marker and to check out using the electronic check out station. They also learn to return their items each week.
Genre: students are introduced to the following genres: humorous stories, animal stories, fantasy stories, realistic stories and age appropriate non fiction books.

1st Grade:
Book care is again introduced and reinforced, along with checking out books and returning them on time.
Library Check Out: students learn to locate books in the Everybody section of the library using their shelf markers. They now are able to check out 2 books per week and return on time.
Parts of book: students learn about the cover, spine and body. They also learn the importance of the spine label.
Genre: these students are learning about humorous, animal, realistic, fantasy, fairy tales and age appropriate non-fiction books.
 
2nd Grade:
Book care again is reinforced.
Library Organization: these students will learn about spine labels and their importance to locating books in the library. They also learn about title pages in books and author dedications. They will learn ABC order and its importance in our library.
Genre: These students are learning about the same genre as the earlier grades, but also are introduced to historical fiction, folk tales, and poetry.
Author Studies: Students will learn about some famous authors and identify and contrast writing styles, characters, and word use.
Award Books: students will learn about Caldecott Award Books and how they are chosen.

3rd Grade:
Locations of Books: students learn to use the automated system to find books to find books by title, author or subject.
Book Parks: students learn how to use table on contents in fiction and non-fiction books. They also learn about an index and glossary.
Dewey Decimal System: students are introduced to the Dewey Decimal System as a way non fiction books are organized.
Literature Development: students learn to identifying themes, setting, plot, conflict, characters, and resolution.
Genre: students learn about Native American Stories, biographies, science non fiction, joke and riddles, along with the previously mentioned genres from other grades.

4th Grade:
Students will learn and practice using the computer system for finding books by title, author, subject and key word.
Students will learn how to find titles on the shelves in Fiction and non-fiction using spine labels.
Students will learn the Dewey Decimal System for organizing the collection of non fiction books.
Students will learn to use the following reference materials: Almanacs, Encyclopedias, and Dictionaries.
Literature development will include the following genres: humorous, mystery, folk tales, fairy tales, biographies, realistic fiction, poetry, fantasy, short stories and non-fiction. Students will continue to develop skills in identifying setting, characters, plot, climax, resolution, and sequence.
Reading Counts to promote comprehension continues.
