First Grade CurriculumFirst grade provides the child with the total school experience for the first time. A literature-based whole language approach is utilized as well as the presentation of phonetic decoding skills. The development of word formation and its vocabulary meaning to build developing skills in reading and verbal comprehension is a primary goal. Reading Recovery strategies are utilized. The beginning development of writing skills and the opportunities to write are emphasized. Mathematical knowledge is developed through problem solving and the use of manipulatives in alignment with State guidelines. The concepts of life forces, social structures and movements are emphasized in science and social studies. The beginning development of listening and study skills, together with accepting responsibility for self and group interaction, is another area of high priority. The following are taught in the classroom: reading, phonics, handwriting, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, health, art, drug awareness, and communicable disease. The following are taught outside the classroom by specialists: library, physical education, and music. |
