State Rule Change Regarding OAKS Retesting
Gladstone schools are in the process of administering the annual required state OAKS assessments. The Oregon Department of Education allows students to have multiple opportunities to meet state standards and/or to improve their score no matter whether they 'do not meet', 'meet' or 'exceed' on their first test attempt. Recent action by the State Board of Education allows parents of any student in grades 3-8 who has already met or exceeded the state standard for their grade to request that their student not be retested to improve the student's existing score. This action does not change the school's obligation to administer a state test to all students in grades 3-8 at least once each year in each subject. Requests to not retest must be made using a form that will soon be available at both John Wetten Elementary and Kraxberger Middle School. Completed request forms should be submitted on or before March 2nd. Additional information will be included in school newsletters. Please contact Susan Olds ( / 503-655-2544) or Bill Stewart ( / 503-655-2777) if you have any questions.
Solar Power Coming to Three Gladstone Schools
Gladstone School District is one of the first school districts in Oregon to receive a solar power incentive under PGE's new Solar Payment Option program, which was authorized by the Oregon Public Utility Commission in 2010. Gladstone High School, Kraxberger Middle School and the Gladstone Center for Children and Families each received an allocation allowing installation of up to 100kW of photovoltaic solar at each site.
The District worked with Gerding Edlen Sustainable Solutions and Kenyon Energy to secure third-party financing for the full cost of the three installations. The District will have no upfront or on-going costs and will be credited for all the energy produced by the projects. REC Solar is the design, engineering, and construction firm who will be installing the solar systems, which is currently slated for kickoff in early August, with completion scheduled for mid-September. Direct access to solar production data for classroom use will also be part of each installation.
The GHS array will consist of traditional high-efficiency crystalline solar panels installed on the new roof areas of the auditorium and Applied Science and Technology wing. At WLK and the GCCF, where roof load limitations are an issue, new-generation, lightweight thin-film solar panels will be used. More information about the projects will be available in future issues of the GladReport.
